Matty Taylor Visits the Manor Club
Oxford United legend, Matty Taylor, spoke to senior U’s supporters on Wednesday.
A sold-out crowd attended the Cowley Workers Social Club to hear behind-the-scenes stories from Matty’s playing career.
Oxfordshire-born Taylor came through the Oxford United Academy before departing in 2009. The striker then enjoyed successful spells at Forest Green Rovers, Bristol Rovers and Bristol City before returning to the Club in 2019.
He finished as top scorer for Oxford United for three successive seasons and is currently ninth on the list of all time scorers for the Club. It was announced last week that Matty had also returned to Oxford United to take up a coaching role within the Academy.
Launched in 2017 by Oxford United in the Community, the Manor Club for Over-50s brings together senior Oxford United supporters to spend an afternoon in the company of a guest speaker. The social initiative is in its ninth season of delivery and aims to reduce the risk of older U’s fans developing feelings of loneliness and isolation by creating new connections with likeminded people.
Following his visit, Matty said: “It was an honour to share the stage and go through my career with Rosie (Peter Rhoades-Brown) who coached me when I was a young lad coming through the age groups.
“It’s really important for the Club to do more in the community. There’s obviously loads of projects going on and this is a really good one.
“There were lots of people here today and it was really nice to see them.”
Next month’s Manor Club meeting will take place on Wednesday 1 April and will commemorate the 40th anniversary of Oxford United’s Milk Cup victory. Club Ambassador and Milk Cup winner, Peter Rhoades-Brown will switch from interviewer to interviewee, with Jerome Sale from BBC Radio Oxford hosting.
All proceeds from the event will support Oxford United in the community’s projects and programmes.
