Oxford United in the Community is continuing to strengthen its connection to the Academy through its football development programme.

Operating during term-time, the Oxford United Elite Development Centre is an invitation-only programme for boys and girls aged seven to 16.

The programme offers children the opportunity to train in a team environment, improving both individual ability and tactical knowledge of the game.

Leading the programme is Alex Blane, who has worked for the Club’s Official Charity for over 15 years – progressing from part-time coach to his current role as Football Development Manager.

He said: “We create a great environment with professional coaching, and our players get the opportunity to represent the Club by wearing the badge.”

Players who are progressing strongly within the Elite Development Centre may have the opportunity to join the Oxford United Academy. Former participants of the programme include Louis Griffiths who, after joining the Academy, made his debut for the Men’s First Team at the age of 16.

The pathway has continued to grow, with young goalkeeper Ruben recently joining the Academy at Under-9 level.

Ruben’s mother, Vicky, said: “While he was at the Elite Development Centre, he also did extra goalkeeping training which really helped his confidence.”

The Elite Development Centre also allows its participants the opportunity to continue to play for their grassroots clubs alongside the programme.

All profits generated from training and playing fees are reinvested back into Oxford United in the Community to support the Charity’s vital work across Oxfordshire.
